Young Entrepreneur of the Year – Nevell Provo, Co-Founder & CEO, SmoothMealPrep
Nevell Taijuan Provo was born in North Preston and is a hard working, driven young man. Nevell was an accomplished athlete in his youth, having played basketball in Baltimore before returning home to partner with his family to co-found Smooth Meal Prep. He has been recognized as an agent of change and understands there are few businesses from the black community in Nova Scotia. He is proud to be part of a new movement leading entrepreneurial charge to inspire others to take on business opportunities. Nevell is CEO of SmoothMealPrep which offers low-carb and high protein meals for fitness and health-minded people which offers meals for those looking to lose weight, gain muscle or simply eat foods that are nutritious and accessible. He works with his mother and brother and has seven staff and several volunteers, all from North Preston. The company has grown from a modest 10 customers to exceed $100,000 in revenue – and this has all happened in their first year of business. We are honoured to present Nevell with our 2020 Young Entrepreneur of the Year!
Business Advisor of the Year Award – Dr. Robert Blunden, Blunden & Associates.
For over 40 years, Bob has taught and consulted on various topics surrounding family business. He believes that family enterprises are at the root of regional prosperity, especially when you move out of the big city centres. Yet in Canada, very little is known about the real extent, the real impact, of family businesses. He is one of the founding members of Family Business Atlantic, formerly CAFE Nova Scotia, and an accomplished case writer & researcher who has helped illuminate issues around family business succession and the nature of family businesses. Recently, Bob retired as Associate Professor of Strategic Management and Family Enterprise at the Rowe School of Business, Dalhousie University in Halifax and continues to help families as Principal Consultant of Blunden and Associates. We are so pleased to present Bob with our first 2020 Business Advisor of the Year Award!
Outstanding Businesswoman of the Year – Aileen Reid, founder, A.P. Reid Insurance
Aileen founded A.P. Reid Insurance back in 1980 after being told by her boss that she would likely never become a senior partner, simply because she was a woman. Aileen went out on her own with a vision to deliver personalized coverage to clients across Nova Scotia. She never wavered in this vision, often sacrificing personal time and sleep instead of lowering her goals and standards. Much of A.P. Reid’s success can be attributed to Aileen’s innovative and unique leadership style. She has not been afraid to take risks; instead, Aileen thrives on doing what her competitors balk at and is constantly breaking new ground in the industry. After leading the company for 25 years, Aileen’s son, Jamie took over the role of president in 2005 with a goal of taking the business beyond Nova Scotia, serving customers coast to coast. She has been recognized with many accomplishments and was recognized as the first woman and only eighth individual to become a Canadian Chartered Insurance Broker in Nova Scotia. She was also awarded the WXN’s 2010 Award Winner. FBA is thrilled to honour Aileen with our first Business Woman of the Year Award.
Come and celebrate the successes of these amazing leaders!
